For most people, conservatism is a barrier to innovation, when an organization becomes excessively conservative and averse to developmental ideas and innovation, due to unnecessary fears of loosing its values, such organization finds itself stuck in the past and may never finds its way to the top. This is not to assert that there are no innovative ideas that are harmful to the foundation of an organization, but the fact remains that certain creative ways of doing things should be embraced and implemented to ensure development.
The Muslim student society of Nigeria (MSSN) ABU Zaria Chapter, is one society that has always been perceived as conservative in nature. The Muslim student body in other to change the status quo ante have introduced programmes that may be described as liberal in nature, programmes that would right the wrongs as it concerns the perception of the society by all and sundry.
So far, the society has introduced new programmes and events that are aimed at improving the students from an academic and intellectual perspective. Programmes such as Fresher’s Forum, Campus Discuss, Jihad Week and Marriage Guidance and Counselling weekend among others are in the offing for student’s pleasure.
The first campus discourse for instance is a novel programme where faculties face one another in a debate conquest about contemporary issues ranging from politics, education, science and technology, history among others. The idea according to the Secretary General of the Association Ustaz Nabil Ugoshi, “ to fostering unity amongst members of ABU community.”
Also the programme can also serve as a platform for Muslim students to be in the know about contemporary issues within and outside Nigeria.” The campus discourse is made colourful with features such as poetry rendition, Impromptu poetry, Debates and Paper presentation based on TEDx standard. Interlude is also added to the mix in the form of observations from the judges and the audience.
The discourse which is now in its finals will see the faculty of arts facing faculty of life science in what is expected to be the most gruelling debate since the inception of the programme. The date for the finals is yet to be decided as at the time of writing this piece.
Another interesting package is the marriage guidance and counselling weekend (MAGACO), it would be a 3 days program, running from the 7th to 9th September 2018. The features of the programme include, Poetry rendition on themes such as marriage and love, public lecture for Singles, Workshop for the married on marriage related matters and unveiling of newly paired couple by the MSSN Abu-Zaria Chapter. This and many other interesting events have being organised and still being organized by the society.
Images and videos emerging from such as organized by MSSN, clearly shows a large attendance of students and the turnout is expected to go North in subsequent programmes.
