Greenhouse also called glasshouse, building designed for the protection of tender and out-of-season plants against excessive cold or heat
NAERLS greenhouse is designed and fabricated by the institute (NAERLS) after a series of technology verification research which reveal the inadequacy and short comings of the imported greenhouses. Therefore the greenhouse is indigenous to suits the Nigerian environment, the experts of the institute make the fabrication with 70% locally available materials. The greenhouse technology for vegetable production is gaining prominence and has become an area of growing interest and investment. It provides a great avenue for attainment of higher and better crop yields from a small area and minimal quantity of water. The greenhouse has some potential benefits which include; high production per unit area of land, suitable for arid and semi-arid climate, easy control of pest and diseases, growing round the seasons, high quality of crop production, timely crop production, and saving on crop protection and exposure to chemical toxins.
One of the most widely cultivated crops in the greenhouse technology is the tomatoes production. It is an important source of vitamins and an important cash crop for small holders and minimum scale commercial farmers. Tomato (lycopersion esculentum) is one of the important crop World Wide. World tomato production in 2001 was about 105 million tons of fresh fruits from an estimated 3.9 million.
Based on the verification trial for tomato conducted over (3) production cycles the following results were obtained and established: The harvesting period for determinate tomato variety rangers from 6-8 months, tomato yield/plant over the harvesting period ranges from 7-10kg , and benefit/cost ratio 3:1, which indicate that it is highly profitable enterprise.
