ORPHANS IN NEED

Auwal Aisha Gama

Orphans refers to the children whose parents (especially fathers) died while they are below the age of maturity. In other words, male or female children who lost one or both parents in their premature are regarded as orphans. These children are virtually brought up by relatives of their parents; but if the relatives are not capable of taking their responsibility, they are taken to orphanage until they are matured.

The situation of orphans in contemporary times is deteriorating in that they are deprived of human basics let alone secondary and tertiary needs. Orphans today, find it tough to survive due to the deprivation of food, shelter, clothing and better education. The society does not care about the condition of orphans: people seem to be self concerned: only showing care and concern over their family and nothing more.

In developed countries, orphans are taken care of in such a way that they do not lack anything which other parented children have. They are cherished in a furnished orphanage and offered good food, better education and even tertiary needs. However, the reverse is the case in Nigeria: orphans do not receive good treatment in the society or even in the orphanage.

Many orphans are marginalized and viewed by the society as less privileged; orphans view the world and its people very oppressing and showing inhuman behavior towards them. So also, the society does not proffer solutions as to how the future of these orphans should be brighter.

In addition, the early ages of orphans does not allow them to accept their position in the society and therefore, the society must vow to provide aid of many kinds to help them view themselves as all other children. Orphans among whom are very young children who are below the age of 8 cannot accept being orphans because they are too young to appreciate the social class system.

Consequently, the negligence of the society with regards to the good condition of orphans make the children develop in their psychology that their relationship with the people around them is not helping matters. This remains constant in the minds of the orphans till their maturity; hence, they too, will continue to cultivate in themselves the habit of not proffering help to the helpless.

In another angle, these orphans, may be future leaders or ambassadors of their respective communities at one level of society or the other; but, when they are abandoned and showed no concern, as they grow older, that scar of no mercy continues to stay in their hearts and so, they too, will take advantage and exploit others to the detriment of the less strong.

Many orphans are marginalized and viewed by the society as less privileged; orphans view the world and its people very oppressing and showing inhuman behaviour towards them. So also, the society does not proffer solutions as to how the future of these orphans should be brighter Their minds. Also, social vices as corruption, instable governance and extremism will have no room in the nearer future if orphans and less privileged are considered and regarded.
