STUDENTS' UNIONISM; OUR SYSTEM SUPPORTS CORRUPTION

Looting of associations' treasury by the so-called comrades is disturbing and have kept someone like me restless, and anyone else interested in seeing a bright future for this country, by moving from 18th century to at least 20th century country. Undeniably, we're quick to point accusing fingers to the comrades and squarely holding them responsible for that. But, is the system in which these comrades operate in not responsible for much of the embezzlement, to put it bluntly, or rather supports it, in a mild way?

It's an understatement to assert that comrades spent on electioneering, comrades spent a lot to clinch the various offices they're vying for. Aside from campaign funds, our comrades purchase forms at a huge price. While in campus I have seen a publication advertising presidential form for #10,000. It's pointless to say, that a candidate purchasing this form will have to spend triple of such money for electioneering.

It's suitable to mention that there's no constitutional provisions for executives of an association to receive allowances. Ostensibly, these executives are meant to serve for free throughout their tenure in office. While at the same time, the treasury is under their custody.

Pertinently, the efforts of these comrades are laudable. These are students who sacrifice their valuable time and energy to see that they deliver; the very essence of why they are elected. Of course, they cover same course work as their colleagues, coupled with their leadership role.

Unexpectedly, one who will serve with his money, time and energy, deservedly, need a token to complement his or her efforts. But, the flaw of our system is that it lacks this rewarding technique. Knowingly, their reward is with the Almighty. Alternatively, should they not be rewarded materially here? However, one may assert that why should they vie for the positions while they are certain that they have nothing in return. This thought can be dismissed as utter balderdash, who can successfully operate in this system?

Our comrades shouldn't be embezzlers. We should devise a means of rewarding these guys for their services and the earlier the merrier. The executives can be allocated say 30% of the treasury after their tenure, with that shared amongst them in a ratio based on their offices. Needless to say, this will go a long way in curtailing siphoning of funds and above all, it will motivate them to source funds for the association.

This is the needed political hygiene that our system needs. Shamingly, this tragedy of candidates spending more than enough in electioneering is found in our national politics and have since been normalized. How on earth will our politicians perform to our expectations? Most importantly, how will the genuine and honest people vie for positions?

To sum up, I'll also prescribe that fees for forms should urgently be reduced to a minimal and considerable amount. These prescriptions for allowances to our comrades and reduction in form fees can be enacted into the constitution of various associations.
