In the current dispensation of the 21st century where everything and almost everyone is depending on electricity, it is rather an irony that Nigeria seems to be oblivious of this one major need. The power of electricity is an invaluable requirement in the development of any nation or country. However in Nigeria, power outage seems to be welcomed with all normalcies; as individuals are even left stunned if electricity is left by the authorities for hours without interruption. Though most Nigerians have grown to accept this shortage and constant outage of power, it still seems that the footprint it’s leaving behind is rather deflective and detrimental to Nigeria’s development.

In any growing economy like Nigeria; the place and the contributions of power cannot be overemphasized. Industries, companies and organizations that depend on heavy machineries for production massively need constant supply of electricity to conduct and carry out their daily targets. But with the incessant power outage, most firms are left with no other choice but to resort to generators; though generator may supply power it is rather appalling that its disadvantage is far ahead of the advantage; it’s a source of noise pollution, fuel dependent, also air pollution and its productivity cannot be compared with electricity.

Further more, the inconsistency attached to power issues in Nigeria is of high disadvantage to small and medium entrepreneurs. This is evident most of their businesses is attached to power supply. According to report by Daily Trust newspapers most young businesses die at early stage because of limited power supply; ice fish vendors, cold drink sellers, shoe cobblers, grain millers, butchers the list can go on and on. Some of these meager business men are forced to resort to generator but they have to constantly share their profit in the purchase of fuel which affects their savings at the long run.

Agriculture seem to have suffered enormously in the face of power outage; storage facilities like colds rooms and other electricity dependent storage facilities are impaired, this situation has now led to food wastage, poor storage and also shortage in food supply since there is no enough to distribute at the needful times. Though, this is evident it seem rather to be increasing by the day. Most farmers and individuals involved in agricultural activities are now deliberately reducing their yields so they can avoid wastage especially those dealing with perishable plants like onion, pepper, tomato, fish etc.

Nevertheless, for Nigeria to attain its full development in agriculture, economy, transportation, education and infrastructure; the need for a stable electricity power supply cannot be overemphasized. The government needs to give more attention to tackling this issue since it’s been place for a very long time. Further more, the Kainji Dam can be massively transformed to provide more megawatts tons of electricity. Citizens need to be also careful and avoid reckless and careless electricity connections; this action is vile and completely illegal as it may lead to power damage and even fire outburst. To a become the true giant of Africa, there has to be a bright future through the constant disposal of electricity power supply.
