One must wonder what are the Seven Wonders of the World. These are man-made structures or creation which has Boggled the minds of men. In 2007, more than a 100 million people voted for the new Seven Wonders of the World which has remained a sight to see till date.
The Great Wall of China
This is a most treasured structure for the people of China. The Great Wall which most of us might have seen in movies is popular for been the longest structure ever built as the walls spans approximately 4,000 miles. It was built between the 5th century B. C and 16th century.
The Great Wall is a stone and earth structure built to protect the boarders of the Chinese empire from intruders and invading Mongols. It was voted the first wonder of the world.
Christ the Redeemer statue ( Rio de Janeiro).
This statue has been looming over the Brazilians on a Corcovado mountain since 1931. The statue is about 130 foot structure made with concrete and soapstone designed by Heitor da Siva Costa and cost about $250,000.
Machu Picchu ( Peru)
The Machu Picchu is a city in the highlands of Peru thought by scholars to have been a sacred archaeological center. It was built in the mid 1400. Though abandoned by its people the site was unknown except for the locals living around the area until it was discovered by Hiram Bingham.
It is known for its sparkling which is precariously perched between two Andean peaks.
Chichen itza ( Yucatan peninsula, Mexico)
The Chichen itza is a sophisticated astronomical observatory located in Mexico. The genius and adaptable culture of Mayan can be seen in the splendid ruins of Chichen itza. The powerful city is known for its trading centre for cloth, slaves, honey and salt, flourished from approximately 800 to 1200 and the Chichen itza acted as a political and economic hub of the Mayan civilization.
The Roman Colosseum ( Rome)
Most of us might have come across this structure in gladiator movies. This is the most enduring icon in Colosseum. It was built between 70 A. D and 80 A. D. The structure takes over 50,000 spectators who gathered to watch the gladiatorial event as well as other spectacles including battles, reenactment and animal hunt.
The most interesting fact about this structure is that earthquakes and stone robbers have tampered with it but it still remains till date. It remains open to tourist and it's design still influences the construction of modern day architect.
The Taj Mahal (Agra, India)
An interesting story about this structure is that it was commissioned for the wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It was built between 1632 and 1648. It is considered the most perfect specimen of Muslim art in India as the white marble structure represents a number of architectural styles including Persian, Islamic, Turkish, and India.
The Taj Mahal has gardens of raised pathways with flower beds and a reflecting pool.
Petra ( Jordan)
The Petra is said to have existed in its prime from 9 B. C to A. D 40. It was declared a world heritage site in 1985. The members of this civilization proved to be early experts in manipulating water technology, constructing intricate tunnels and water chambers.
