Gambling is a recreational activity that most people use to consume time and for some, earn a little extra cash on the side. However, this becomes a problem when gambling becomes a habit one finds hard to break.
In Nigeria today, the problem of gambling amongst students, especially those in the higher institutions is becoming more and more rampant.
Students especially those with financial constraints end up throwing away what little money they have left with the hopes of multiplying their stakes when if the earnings from their gamble pays. But as the popular saying goes, ‘the house always wins’. Students who use their pocket money to bet on one platform or the other sometimes find themselves in a worse situation than when they stake their first bet. The companies involved usually attract these individuals by first giving them a taste of winning; it all goes downhill from here.
Student who make it a habit to gamble away their pocket money find it very hard to break this habit, they end up borrowing money from friends and class mates and find it difficult to pay when the piper comes calling. this results in arguments or fights between the two parties involved sometimes leading to one or both of them being detained or hospitalised.
The following are ways to avoid the above situations.
· Don’t borrow money if you don’t need to: one of the major issues is derived when one borrows money from his/ her peers. Access to a little amount of money and hopes of doubling it drives one to repetitive gambling.
· Do plan your monthly budget: draw out a draft of how and when you should spend your pocket money. Planning in advance helps one maintain his money and reduces the need for gambling.
· Don’t gamble often: gambling is not necessarily a bad thing. Gambling continuously especially when one losses often is a sign of a problem. If you find yourself acting in that manner; talk to friends, family, and your school psychologist for advice.
· Don’t gamble at all: as it is said, prevention is better than cure, a sure fire way to avoid a gambling addiction is not to start gambling to begin with.
· Engage yourself in hobbies: find a hobby to distract yourself if you find yourself constantly going to a local gambling shop. Visit your library often and immerse yourself in your studies and other social activities.
