BRUSHING YOUR TEETH

GABRIEL AKHUETIE

Sincerely, when was the last time you brushed your teeth after every meal? Ok, wait... That's obviously too much hardwork so I'll rephrase.

Now, sincerely, when was the last time you brushed your teeth at least twice a day- when you wake up in the morning and before you sleep at night?

I admit, brushing the teeth is so second nature that you barely think about it. But you see, the fact that you do it everyday does not garantee your doing it right.

Brushing your teeth the right way is a key part of good oral health and it can help you avoid cavities and gum disease. Needless to say, it also gives you the confidence that you need to go through each and every other day... Yes, smile!

Let's be a bit more practical- I know how almost impossible it is to brush after every meal- I mean, doesn't that sound totally unachievable? Well, unless of course you stay at home all day, every day. Because even if you carry a toothbrush and toothpaste with you every day and time you go out, brushing your teeth is not something you'd readily want to do in public.

I'd also understand if you forget to brush your teeth before going to bed after having a very busy day and all the mind and body can understand is to shutdown and sleep- I mean, we are all guilty of that... Sadly.

What I don't get though, is how you can forget to brush your teeth in the morning, before the start of your everyday activities. Haba!! If you ask me, I think that is a federal offense that must be punishable by law! Anyways, moving on...

Question- have you ever met anybody who uses other people's toothbrushes without as much as giving it a thought? Well, I have! And arrrggh!! I think they should be locked up somewhere very far! I'll never forget how totally disgusted I was when a friend came to visit and it rained all through the day and into the night so he had to sleep over. I noticed he stood almost lifelessly next to me in the morning while I was brushing my teeth so I asked "wetin happen?" Thinking about it now, I probably shouldn't have asked him- maybe I'd have saved myself the truama of hearing him say "I dey wait make you finish so that I go just use your brush take tidy real quick". That scarred me... For life!

And then, there are those people whose toothbrushes have been around for like forever! Again, I say- Haba!! Oya, listen to me- grab your toothbrush, now, that there in your hand, yes... That toothbrush... Throw it away and let it go! It is not a medal. Thank you.

Experts say to change your toothbrush every 3 months and I agree with them. Full stop!

Now, let's talk about those people who get afraid of using their toothpaste because in their calculations, it should last forever and maybe a day more. I know there is no specific recommended amount of toothpaste to be used every time you brush your teeth but truth is, if you are using less than you should, I'm very sure you'd know. You have a conscience my dear... Let it speak to you! Thank you.
