DRUG ABUSE

By Odey Emmanuel Okache (U14MM1063)

I understand the idea of drugs and the beauty of being in stack control of oneself and the euphoric feeling of being in superior command of one’s’ actions without necessarily answering to anyone. I understand that sometimes one needs to be in charge of one’s life free from external control and the whims and caprices of anyone who is not you. I understand these and more are what drugs makes one believe. Especially the codeines, heroin, the marijuana and all sorts of drug that is taken without the prescription of doctors and medical personnel. I understand that freedom is a priceless gift and the exercise of it even more so. And maybe this is what drugs in its veiled nature allow our vulnerable eyes see and our pried minds perceive so that the exhibition of this evil, coated and wrapped in ways that appeal to the emotions would be justified and our seeming pain lessened by the sheer satisfaction it brings . Maybe, these are the lies it sell to us; a freedom and liberty to break free, away from pain and agony, freedom from the seeming disappointment and a remedy to boredom. For some, it is the heavenly vehicle that drives them to immeasurable pleasures and far reaching heights that the seeming “ordinary men” who do not share in their “holy communion “can reach only in their dreams and visions. It is indeed perforating how much length we go to tell ourselves truthful lies. It is sad and somewhat funny how far we go to tell ourselves that the depression or anguish faced yesterday would disappear into thin air by the subtle lies the drugs drag us to believe or the momentary serenity that comes with it.

However, one must understand that the pleasures that endure momentarily are only elusive and deceitful ways to eternal hurt and regretful tears. One must understand that the way out of evil is not in evil doing. Adolescent and adulthood comes with a lot of challenges, hiccups and hitches hence, one must determine that the right ways must be followed and the readiness to see through it, a necessary panacea. It may be disappointing in its early stages but it is not without gain in the end. I know how irritating a lonely life could be, I know how nauseating it is to have a nagging wife, I know how sickening it is to be unemployed and without shelter. I know how it feels to feel cheated by nature and her cohorts. And I also know that when all these happens we become poised to running to the waiting embrace of drugs but the truth is marijuana, codeines and all sorts only tell us lies we want to hear. It tells us the problem would be solved or is solved. It tells us that this is the way. It whispers to us that the nagging wife is gone, it tells us that the pain is no more, it tells us sincere lies, the only lies we have wanted to hear. It is until we wake up to the reality of truth and face life squarely that these miseries would be relegated to its place, far away from us.

The solution to getting through any storm or turmoil in life is to work and pray towards it. There is no righteousness to any evil no matter how much satisfaction we derive therein. Life is not always rosy but drug addiction is certainly not any rosier. We must learn to live our lives without addictions as they may in a long way define and detect how we run our lives and we may end up being slaves to our emotions.
